February Guest Editor | Introducing Stephen Smith
I started following Stephen Smith’s photography a few years ago through Instagram. So naturally last year, when I found out he was going to be showing at a gallery in DTLA, I quickly jumped at the chance to meet him and see his stunning work in person. It turns out we had many things in common – North Carolina roots, a passion for the great outdoors, and a love of sustainably, well-made products. It took a little bit of convincing, since he is a man of photos and not words, to bring him on as an Of The Wolves Guest Editor, but we did it! As with many things, persistence is key. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so we will let Stephen’s photo stories as well as profiles on some of his favorite organizations do most of the talking for him this week. However, below you can get to know the incredible man behind the lens a bit better.
Where are you from and what was the path that lead you to LA?
I was born and raised in North Carolina but spent about 15 years bouncing between CA and CO. Something about the positive, inclusive, and supportive creativity of LA inspired me to make this my home base for the last year and a half.
When did you pick up a camera, and how did it transition from being a hobby into being your career?
I was shooting film since I was in middle school. I majored in photography and sculpture in school but didn’t jump into a professional career until 2015. It was time to give it a go. So far, so good.
How has your love of photography nurtured your love of the great outdoors – agriculture, sustainability and conservation, adventure…?
Shooting photos has taught me to pay attention, look for the details, the unusual phenomenons, the special moments and arrangements of the elements. It’s also a great way to tell a story and relate to the subjects, often times strangers. It opens doors in foreign lands that have lead to memorable experiences and long friendships.
Our motto at Of The Wolves is, “Magically One of a Kind, Powerfully Part of the Pack,” how do you feel that this applies to your life?
Being a part of a pack of wild ones, weirdos, forward thinking and fearless individuals is endlessly inspiring!
